ASUU Finally Call Off 8 Months Strike Due to Pressure - Osodeke

The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called off its eight months old strike due to reasons described by the President, Emmanuel Osodeke pending when issues will be addressed.

This was contained in a message released to newsmen and across social media by the ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke explaing the reasons they called off the strike.

He said, the union called off the strike due to the court injunction and the intervention of Mr. Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila of the House of Representative and the loud cry of our students, parents and well meaning Nigerians.

We called off the strike due to the court injunction, appeals from students, parents, and the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Reps. Femi Gbajabiamila, not because issues have been addressed, says ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke.

ASUU for the past eight months has taken a serious battle with the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employement, headed by the Honourable Minister, Dr Chris Ngige over issues bordering around agreement biding betwen the Union and Nigeria Government.

In course of this strike, the ministry of Labour has registered and recognised another separate academic union called CONUA (Congress of Nigeria University Academics) headed by its National Coordinator, Niyi Sunmonu, a lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

The strike action has already affected the academic year of most universities except those not under ASUU. It means some universities might merged two sessions to accommodate the incoming students who sat the 2022 JAMB.

Another issue pending resolution is the payment of university lecturers for the period of the strike action, if Federal Government decides to implement "No Work No Pay" policy.

For now, students have been directed to resume and commence academic activities for the effective use of the 2022/2023 academic session.
