FG Recognizes CONUA As Academic Union, ASUU Faction

Chris Ngige

The Nigeria Government will today present a certificate of registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), a separate body of academic unions as ASUU faction.

This was contained in information sent to reporters by Oshundun Olajide, the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment Abuja.

It was stated that the honourable Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, will do the presentation at the Hon. Minister Conference Room, Federal Secretariat, Phase 1, Abuja by 2 pm.

CONUA, a separate body of academic unions with a presence in a few federal universities, is led by its National Coordinator, Niyi Sunmonu, a lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

Federal Government recognizes CONUA as academic union and as ASUU faction due to prolonged strike action.

The statement reads in part;

The message by the Ministry of Labour read, “The Honorable Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige cordially invites you to the recognition and presentation of Certificate of Registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics”

It added, “Your media organisation is invited to cover the event and strictly by invitation.”

It was widely reported that ASUU has been on strike since February 14 2022 to press home its demands.

Despite a ruling by the National Industrial Court on Sept 21, 2022 ordering the university to return to work, the University lecturers have remained adamant.

The Federal Government therefore is taking another step to rescue the university system from dyeing in the hand of ASUU officials, who have refused to resume academic activities after reaching an agreement and also comparing the government to pay their salaries during the strike period of about eight months.

It is hope that CONUA leadership will savaged the nation university system from ASUU tactical system of destruction and frustration of both students, parents in particular and the nation in general.
