Akwa Ibom is a state located in South-South geo-political of Nigeria comprising of 31 local government area (LGA) created on 23 September 1987 during the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

History

Akwa Ibom State was created on the 23rd of September 1987 by the then Military Administration of General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida. The creation of the state brought to fruition years of prolonged struggle by the people that occupied the mainland part of the former Cross River State.

Akwa Ibom State is based around the production of crude oil and natural gas as highest oil-producing state in the country, with Ibeno, Mbo and Eastern Obolo as oil-producing LGAs.

Population

Males 73,578, females 65,512, for a total of 139,090 according to 2006 National Census and data be updated after 2023 Census.

The people of “The Land of Promise” have originally lived in the Ibom village in Arochukwu. Over time, they migrated to the current state's location. The name originates from a river called the Kwa Iboe.
