The Roman Catholic former Pope Benedict XVI has died aged 95. He succeeded John Paul II as Pope in 2005, but stepped down in 2013 citing his advanced age.

He was the first pope in nearly 600 years to resign, and the first German in the role for 1,000 years. As Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, he headed the powerful doctrinal office in the Vatican for nearly 25 years prior to his papacy.
