Benue State is a North Central state created on February 3, 1976 from the former Benue-Plateau State comprising of 22 LGAs.

The desire of the Igala people to rejoin their Kith and Kin led to the creation of Kogi State in 1991 leaving Benue State with its present boundaries.

As an administrative unit, Benue State was first created on 3 February 1976. It was one of the seven states created by the military administration headed by General Murtala Mohammed, which increased the number of states in the country from 13 to 19.

Languages

There are three main languages spoken in Benue State represented by ethnic peoples; Tiv, Idoma and Igede, Tiv being the largest of the three. Idoma and Igede speakers speak Tiv. Also, Tiv speakers speak no other ethnic language, although most speak English.
