Sokoto State was created in February 3, 1976 out of the then North Western State during regime of General Murtala Mohammed. It's capital and largest city is Sokoto.

History

The state is named after its capital Sokoto, a city with a long history and the seat of the Sokoto Caliphate.

According to the provisional figures of the 2006 National Population Census, Sokoto State has population of 3,696,99 people made up of principally of two major groups namely; Hausa and Fulani. 

There are of course the Zabarmawa and Tuareg minority in the border Local Government Areas.
