It has caused serious damages to many cities around the world, including Nigeria, which has witness 2012 and 2022 flood. There are solutions posed with flooding challenges, but only the government has the absolute plan to tackle them.

The followings are proven way to address flooding problems in Nigeria and a combination of approaches is often necessary to effectively manage the risks associated with flooding.

  1. Improved urban planning: Constructing proper drainage systems, green spaces, and reducing impermeable surfaces can help manage excess water in urban and flood prone areas.
  2. Flood barriers and embankments: Building barriers can help prevent water from overflowing riverbanks and protect coastal areas from storm surges. Most especially in Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
  3. Reforestation: Planting trees and restoring wetlands can help mitigate flooding by increasing the land’s capacity to absorb water.
  4. Early warning systems: Implementing technology for early flood detection and warning can help people evacuate and take precautions in advance.
  5. Floodplain zoning and land use regulations: Proper land-use planning can restrict construction in high-risk flood areas and protect natural floodplains.
