Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned what he called terrorist killings in South-East Nigeria and promised to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Buhari, who was reacting to the report of the beheading of six Nigeriens and the killing of policemen at their duty post in Imo State, tasked communities and religious leaders to speak out against the killings.

The President stated this in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mallam Garba Shehu on Sunday titled “President Buhari Calls South East Killings Sad And Unwelcome”.

The statement partly read: “President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his unequivocal condemnation of the attacks against non-indigenes and law enforcement officials by terrorists in the South East, promising all possible action in conducting a speedy investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“President Buhari’s reaction came amidst reports of the slaying of six Nigerien citizens and the brutal killing of a number of policemen at their duty posts, urging community and religious leaders to speak more forcefully against the killings, stand up and defend the ethos of our cultural and religious heritage.

“Those who know should point at specific people who did this.

“He expressed his administration’s unwavering commitment to peace and stability in the southeast and the entire country, saying that the reports of killings anywhere were sad and unwelcome.

“He offered his condolences to the families of the law enforcement agents murdered and to the government and people of Niger Republic whose citizens were cruelly beheaded by the beastly attackers.”

Nigerians have questioned the relationship between Buhari and Niger Republic many times, describing it as unhealthy for Nigeria, which should be his major priority.

Recently, Buhari was criticised by many Nigerians following the revelation that he approved the purchase of N1.2 billion naira vehicles to officials in the Niger Republic.

SaharaReporters on June 15, 2022, exclusively obtained a document detailing how President Buhari’s government procured 10 Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles for officials of the Niger Republic with public funds.

The contract was awarded to one Messrs Kaura Motors Nigeria Limited and approved by President Buhari on February 25, 2022.

According to the document sighted by SaharaReporters, the Nigerian government, to cover up its fraud, had obtained a Due Process Certificate of No Objection from the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) to Direct Procurement Method.

The contract was said to be funded from the Ministry of Finance’s 2022 Appropriation sum of N282 billion.

The document is titled, “Approval For The Award Of Contract For The Procurement Of Vehicles For The Republic Of Niger For Logistic Support”.

In June 2021, while explaining the Nigerian government’s infrastructural expansion to the Niger Republic, with the extention of rail from Northern Nigeria to Maradi in Niger Republic, Buhari said he had first cousins in the neighbouring country.

Buhari, while fielding questions in an exclusive interview with Arise Television, said, “I spoke to one Frenchman and I have to tell you this: I said to him, you people in 1885 sat down with ruler and pencil and drew the line. I have first cousins in Niger. There are Kanuris, there are Hausas, there are Fulanis in the Niger Republic. The same way there are Yorubas.
